Summertime is upon us and if you’re anything like me, you’re dreaming of holding our nose and plunging into a cool pool to enjoy these warm days ahead. Well, one Gulf Coast family is taking a different kind of plunge and following a dream to make a spare-time hobby a career.

Daniel Haulbrook spent 21 years serving in the United States Army. His career brought him and his family overseas to Germany and all over the United States from Georgia, Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, and for the past several years to south Mississippi. About five and a half years ago, Daniel started building furniture because his wife Jessica had her eye on a dining room table that was financially out of reach for the family. Out of this project, he discovered a love for woodworking. With an investment from his father-in-law, who was a carpenter himself for 30 years, of tools and encouragement, Daniel began building. He started with furniture and cabinets in his spare time and eventually Jessica volunteered him to remodel a kitchen.

Daniel has recently retired from the Army and is using his expertise and love for building to begin his own business, New Life Woodworking. Visit the website and you can easily see the skill Daniel brings to woodworking. The pieces showcased range from tables, shelves, cabinets, and even a chicken coop that any chicken would be happy to live in. Each piece built to custom taste and beautifully crafted.

When you do business with this local wood expert, you’re not only getting custom quality pieces, but you are also contributing to a locally born charity called Eight Days of Hope. A portion of each project will be donated to Eight Days of Hope, which is an organization that, with the help of volunteers, goes to disaster-effected areas to help residents rebuild their lives. It all started after Hurricane Katrina when a father reached out to his son needing help. The original plan was to come to the Coast to rebuild some homes but what happened was a volunteer effort of 684 people loving and serving families. The organization has since grown and served families all over the nation bringing the love of Jesus to each place they impact.

After being displaced themselves due to a hurricane for a short time, the Haulbrook family has a heart for the organization and serving people. Daniel said, “you can preach at people all day, but when you meet a physical need, you open up their heart to hear what you have to say.”
