You could say there’s some fishy business going on at Point Park.

Indeed, it’s all about fishing at Nelson Outdoors Tackle Box right near the popular Pascagoula boat launch. Whether you need some bait for your day out on the water or just a sympathetic ear to hear your story about “the one that got away,” the newly opened Tackle Box has you covered. Mike and Toby Nelson (the skipper and first mate, respectively) keep the shop stocked with a variety of fresh frozen baits, tackle, fishing accessories, drinks, and snacks—whatever you need for your day.

Toby Nelson said the city has worked hard to transform Point Park into a “first-class” destination with the amenities it offers fishermen, but it needed to be a convenient, local place for fishermen to stock up on the fishing necessities. Based on observing the launch during a busy weekend, Nelson estimates it can safely accommodate more than 100 boats.

“The boat launch at Point Park has been here longer than I can remember, but since Katrina, the city has done an outstanding job of upgrading the point to accommodate the fishermen in our area,” Nelson said “The only thing missing was a bait and tackle shop like other cities on the coast offer. We spoke to the city manager about the idea, and he was in full agreement, so we put a proposal together, worked with the city council, and here we are.”

Nelson said the response to the recent soft opening was “overwhelming.” Nelson hopes having a store right at the park will eliminate the stress of having to find the essentials before the fishing trip.
“We talked to almost everyone that came down to the point last weekend, they were all excited to know we would be there to take care of bait and tackle right at the boat launch,” Nelson said.

The Tackle Box is open Thursday through Sunday, 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.
