It’s already that time of year for some areas of Mississippi. My daughter starts her first day of school within the coming weeks, and I’m definitely gearing up for that myself. I don’t know about you, but I need to get more organized so I don’t have to handle homework and other activities on a whim with a messy household. Here are five must-have tips that I’ll be using and you should too for back-to-school organization.

1. Do a major cleaning

I know I can feel a lot less stressed about helping my daughter with her school activities if my house is clean. Part of this will involve decluttering and getting rid of things we don’t use on a regular basis. This will be a good start to getting the house more organized.

2. Build a homework station

In terms of how you organize this, it depends on the needs of your child. For example, my child will likely need some crayons, markers, pencils, and potentially some other school supplies. It’ll be useful to organize all of these items into bins that are labeled. Alternatively, we can also use an over-the-door school supply organizer.

3. Use a family calendar

This can be any calendar you hang on the wall and write appointments or events in. You might also use a markerboard calendar, so it’s much easier to erase and add events. There are apps that can be used as well. For instance, OurHome is an app that can allow parents to reward their kids for making progress on their chores. This app also allows parents to schedule tasks and chores.

4. Plan dinners in advance

This is one thing that has always helped me. If I know the schedule of my daughter and husband, we can know when we need to plan something easy because that day will be super busy or if we aren’t busy, we can plan a more elaborate supper.

Here are some tips on how to go about planning meals for the week.

5. Meal prep

This can be done for both you and your family. For example, I meal prep my lunches or anything else I can prep for dinners during the week. I also prep my daughter’s lunches and snacks. Thus, she loves cucumbers and carrots, so I cut those up and throw them in Ziploc bags so they are ready to go.

If you’re like me, I always need ideas on how to have a variety in my child’s lunches. These are some good ideas.

Final thoughts

I hope this school year is fun for everyone and that these organization tips help make everyone’s life go a little more smoothly! Be sure to stay safe this school year, especially when driving in a school zone.

I am married, and I also have a 4-year-old daughter. I earned my Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi, and I have been teaching psychology classes over the past 10 years. As a professor and as a parent, I grew to love learning anything about child development. I recently turned that into a passion for helping other parents by starting my own blog at http://www.nurturingtamra.com.
